Arsenal have confirmed that goalkeeper Matt Turner has joined Premier League side Nottingham Forest on a permenant deal. The deal is reported to be worth £10m, with £7m as the base fee, and a further £3m in add-ons.
Turner’s sale has come slightly out of the blue for Arsenal and Arsenal fans. The American goalkeeper departs having never made a single appearance in the Premier League for the club. In fact, Turner only played seven matches in all competitions for Mikel Arteta’s men: 5 in the UEFA Europa League, and 2 in the FA Cup.

Turner initially joined Arsenal from MLS side New England Revolution, for a fee of around £7m. Though the transfer had (in)formally been agreed in the February of 2022, he did not officially join the club until July.
From there, Turner spent most of his time on the bench. Aaron Ramsdale is the club’s number one and, given that Ramsdale experienced no injuries, Turner was rarely, if ever, called upon.

Nevertheless, Turner was a commendably professional member of the squad. Having grown up an Arsenal fan, Turner revealed in an interview how proud he was to have joined the club, especially after he came so close to leaving the sport altogether.
Turner’s best performances have come when representing his country. His heroics were essential to helping the United States win the CONCACAF Nation’s League, as well as the CONCACAF Gold Cup, saving crucial penalties in the USA’s quarter-final sucess over Canada.
The decision to sell Turner signals another foray into the transfer market for Arsenal. A deal for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya has already been cagreed and is expected to conclude this week, with the Gunners reaching an agreement of £25m upfront, and a further £3m in add-ons.

Turner’s sale is the latest in a long line of sales made by the club, after an expensive few months. Following the arrivals of Kai Havertz from Chelsea, Jürrien Timber from Ajax, Declan Rice from West Ham, and the aforementioned expected arrival of Raya from Brentford, the club have been keen to begin the process of shifting players.
Granit Xhaka has already moved to Bayer Leverkusen, Pablo Marí has joined Monza, fellow American Auston Trusty swirtched north London for Sheffield United and now Turner. Nuno Tavares, Nicolas Pépé, Folarian Balogun and Cédric Soares are all available for sale too, though there is nothing advanced at this point.
